Henri

“Why are you calling me about this?” I asked, speaking to my sister Friday afternoon.

“I’m worried about you. I just think that this seems to have similarities to Ellen...” She hesitated. “I’m sure it’s bringing back memories. I want you to know I’m here for you.”

“I haven’t seen the news reports.” I lied. “Other people have drowned since Ellen. I don’t even know who this girl was.”

“She was a woman, Henri—a young woman, but a woman. She was last seen almost six months ago, around the time of Ellen’s death at the Cliffs.”

“Are you saying she’s connected to Ellen’s death? Do you think she had something to do with it? Remember, I’d left. Was this young woman” —I emphasized my sister’s description— “near Ellen?”

“She wasn’t a member,” Ash said. “Her name was Scarlett. She worked there.”

I leaned back in my office chair as Ashleigh continued to describe Scarlett. As she spoke, I recalled all the things my sister didn’t know, things no one knew, no one but Richard and me. I remembered the panic in her eyes when she realized she was captive. At first, she believed it was a joke or an elaborate misunderstanding.

She’d even laughed it off, until she didn’t.

Ashleigh knew the information the news reports said. They didn’t know about her strawberry-shaped birthmark on her left ass cheek or the scar around her right ankle where she’d been chained for the first month of her captivity. They didn’t know the time we’d dedicated to make Scarlett amenable to our plans.

Eventually, Scarlett came to her senses and, in doing so, gained her freedom from the shackle, but not from the suite. Privileges worked in a similar way to punishments. Pavlov was onto something.

Would the coroner be able to determine the cause of the scar on her ankle or others?

Richard was certain she’d had broken ribs after she first became our guest. We didn’t get confirmation—as she wasn’t tended to by a physician—and with time, they too healed. Each step along the way was a necessary evil.

My lips curled.

Sadly, it was Scarlett’s eventual compliance that caused me to lose interest.

The fight she’d had was gone. Her spark fizzled. Yes, Scarlett followed the rules; she willingly fell to her knees and sucked me or spread her legs and took me wherever I desired. However, not even the prompt of punishment would elicit a visceral response.

I’d read a story once about a man who would chain animals outside, just out of reach of food and water. At first, the dogs would bark. Until they didn’t, until they accepted their fate.

Scarlett had reached that point.

She no longer asked for anything or complained about anything. Even the balcony that had at one time been her reward was no longer a form of motivation.

Granted, the timing of my discontent was unfortunate, being before the holiday weekend.

I hadn’t given that as much thought as getting rid of her. I could have spent another week or month with my cock in her mouth—or done as the man in the story did and stop feeding her.
